A Taste of Americana
Yesterday I experienced a part of Americana that I haven't before, at least I haven't for a very long time.
I attended a bridal shower in a tiny agricultural town about a half hour east of St. Joseph, Missouri (in the land of dial up internet connections). I have a hard time grasping that people can be so happy living so simply far away from a major metropolitan area... I was so surprised to hear that most of the people weren't really familiar with Kansas City at all. Thinking, where do you shop for clothes, and stuff like that? So, I felt slightly out of place with my Tiffany & Co. jewelry, expensive shoes with matching handbag. Not one of them had an iPod and I had two in my purse. All in all it was a great day and I enjoyed the quietness and scenery. The bride was making fun of me because I kept noticing all the corn fields and cows along the stretch of two lane road. She was right, it's the most corn I've seen in, um..... years. I'm used to only seeing corn in cans on the shelves at the Super Targét.
Before the shower the bride's mom made us a fabulous huge lunch. It was amazing, and everything tasted so fresh and tasty! Of course there was fresh corn, and mmmmm it was soooo good. However, I was the only one to cut the corn off the cob instead of just eating it. I got a few strange looks but hey, whatever. After the lunch, the shower and the errands we went back to the bride's mom's house and she filled a paper grocery bag of leftovers for each of us to take home. She gave me about 10 fresh ears of corn and several fresh tomatoes from the garden to take home as well, she spoiled me and made sure I knew I was welcome to come up anytime! If it weren't so far away... I defininately would!
So, my experience in the country yesterday was a lot of fun, but as they say it's a great place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there!
