Hit and Run
I have to vent today... Yesterday, a friend of mine and I were at the QuikTrip at 44th and Main in Kansas City getting cheap Cokes to make the rest of our day go by sweeter. As I was (looking) and backing out of the parking spot, a '78 Chevy truck rumbled through the busy parking lot and chunked right into my rear bumper. The owner kept saying to me that it wasn't a big deal. I said, mine is a 2005! IT IS A BIG DEAL! There's a nice tear in the plastic bumper cover and a spot where the plastic had bent and got all stretched out of shape. He wasn't willing to trade information, so Amy and I wrote down his license plate as he casually walked into the station. Not knowing what to do, the both of us stunned... We drove back to the office.
After getting back to my desk, I called the Kansas City Police. They said that they don't respond to personal property loss unless, someone is injured, alcohol is involved or the vehicle isn't driveable. So, I had to drive to the one of the precincts to file a report. The officer took the report, and was quite nice about all of it. She also told me of her disgust of this man who hit my car, then had the nerve to say that I was the one not paying attention. (thinking, yeah, I'm not going to pay attention while driving in a busy parking lot with my 2005 Ford Escape).
After going to the police station, talking to my insurance agent, and the trip to the body shop to find out the cost of the damage I thought that justice would be served. After being informed that the insurance company would cover the damage then investigate the plate to get the money back they paid as well as my $250 deductible... Today I was informed by the adjuster, that they weren't going to go after the guy since I was driving in reverse. So, I'm out $250 because some jerk was not paying attention, then succeeded in intimidating two blonde girls, and getting away with smashing my brand new SUV's bumper. I can think of much better things to spend my $250 on than a bumper cover. I hope my insurance doesn't go up...
