University of Central Missouri

nah, not to me.... i've talked about it a bit on my other blog about the changing of Central Missouri State University's name... well i thought i'd post the offical letter to alumni.

Dear Alumni and Friends:

On September 20, 2006, a historic vote was taken by the university Board of Governors, acting on a bill passed by the Missouri General Assembly, which officially changes our name to the University of Central Missouri. Name changes have been part of our proud 135-year history. We were founded as State Normal School No. 2 in 1871, and became Central Missouri State Teachers College in 1919, Central Missouri State College in 1945, and Central Missouri State University in 1972. Each new name has reflected the changing nature of our institution.

The most recent name change provides a crucial ingredient in fulfilling the university's new vision statement-- symbolically representing our emergence as "a nationally recognized comprehensive university that delivers a world class education". This new opportunity builds on our statewide mission in professional applied sciences and technology, given to the university in 1998 by the state.

The University of Central Missouri is a progressive leader in higher education and now has the opportunity to expand it's service area to national and international markets, implement new graduate and pre-professional programs, and transform its institutional culture to one of greater diversity and inclusiveness.

Our students and alumni will benefit from increased pride in a national recognized university. Over time, the steps we take should enhance the value of their degrees and provide more opportunities for lifelong learning. The university benefits from our expanded vision by offering more programs of national distinction and the ability to attract accomplished faculty. The state of Missouri sees a greater return for it's investment in higher education in the form of a more educated workforce and improved ability to spur economic development.

The campus buzz with energy, and we can literally feel the enthusiasm building. An old African proverb holds that one can go faster alone, but we can go farther if we travel together. Join us as we celebrate the University of Central Missouri's new distinction.
